Ticket income covers about fifty-two per cent of what it costs to run this house. Public funding covers eleven. The remainder is made up by people who have decided the Ardenne should still be here in a hundred years.

Where it goes

Patron income is unrestricted, which is the point of it — it pays for the things that cannot be costed against a single production. The scenic workshop. The repetiteurs. The four years of understudy cover that means a first night is never cancelled. The half-price scheme for under-sixteens, which loses money by design.

Production syndicates

A new staging costs between £180,000 and £600,000 depending on what it asks of the workshop. Syndicates of eight to twelve members underwrite one outright and follow it from the model showing to the first night.

Legacies
